Your hull is gelcoat, not automotive clear coat — it is thicker, more porous, and it chalks instead of peeling when the sun gets to it. What oxidation is, and what it takes to remove it

When gelcoat oxidizes it loses resin at the surface and goes chalky. Wipe a finger across a neglected hull and it comes away white. Wax over that and you are sealing the chalk in — it looks better for a week, then returns worse.

Removing it properly means compounding: cutting past the dead layer to fresh gelcoat underneath, refining the finish, then sealing it. Gelcoat takes a heavier cut than automotive paint, and there is a finite amount of it, which is why aggressive compounding every season is a bad idea. We assess how much you have left before deciding how hard to go. Heavily oxidized hulls can take a full day; a boat kept up annually takes a fraction of that.

Waterline stains and the Lake Lanier problem

Lanier’s water carries tannins from the surrounding hardwoods. On a white hull that leaves a rust-brown band at the waterline that scrubbing will not touch, because it is a chemical stain, not dirt. It needs an acid-based hull cleaner, applied and neutralized correctly — get it wrong and you will etch the gelcoat or run it onto metal fittings. Slipped boats pick this up faster than trailered boats.

Interiors, vinyl and mildew

Georgia humidity is why boat interiors fail before hulls do. Mildew gets into the seams and stitching of vinyl seating, and once it is rooted in the foam beneath, surface cleaning only buys time. We treat vinyl with marine-specific cleaners and follow with a UV conditioner, because vinyl cracks from sun exposure and a cracked seam lets water into the cushion.

Non-skid decks get their own treatment — the texture that keeps you from slipping also traps dirt, and it needs a stiff brush rather than a polisher. Stainless rails, cleats and hardware are polished separately; stainless does rust in freshwater, and those tea-colored streaks below fittings come off.
